What's happening right now?

Door stuck open

Safely, right now

  1. Leave it where it stopped. Don't pull it down by hand or keep pressing the button.
  2. Keep people, pets and cars out from under it.
  3. Leave the red emergency release alone while the door is up: it can come down hard.

Door won't close

Safely, right now

  1. Stop pressing the button. Trying again and again strains the opener and the top of the door.
  2. Keep clear of the doorway, even to move something out of the way. Tell us on the call if you can see anything in the door's path.
  3. Never tape over, bypass or move the little sensors near the floor to force it shut.

Spring snapped

Safely, right now

  1. Don't lift the door by hand and don't use the opener.
  2. Keep everyone, pets included, and every vehicle away from the door.
  3. The emergency release stays untouched while the door is up, because the door can come down.

Car stuck inside

Safely, right now

  1. Never try to push through the door with the car.
  2. If you heard a bang or the door feels heavy, don't pull the release or lift it. A spring may be broken.
  3. Leave the car inside for now and plan another ride.

The fix, explained · Freeman

What is the door doing?

EmergencyTorsion Spring ReplacementAfter pulling the red release cord, you tried lifting the door yourself and it would barely leave the floor.

The fix

The finished result is a door that behaves the way a good garage door should: it lifts by hand with light effort, stays where you leave it at mid-height, closes softly and lets the opener run with little strain. Reaching that point involves measuring the door, choosing a matched spring, winding it to the correct turns and…

Until then

  1. When a spring breaks, the safe approach for the household is to leave the door where it is, keep people and vehicles clear, and avoid running the opener, which can damage the top section, the trolley or the gear drive.

  2. Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyOff-Track Garage Door ResetA delivery van backed into the shop's overhead door this afternoon.

The fix

Off-track doors are really two problems in one, and the reset addresses both. The first is the visible one: a roller outside its rail and a door out of square.

Until then

  1. Never run the opener on a door that is off its track or hanging crooked; every cycle drives the racked door harder into the rails and can pull the track from the wall or tear a hinge.

  2. Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyGarage Door Cable ReplacementThere was a sharp crack from the garage, and when you went to look the door had dropped on one side and jammed.

The fix

A cable visit runs in a set order. First the opener is disconnected and the door clamped so nothing can move.

Until then

Call (289) 816-6526Request a visit Garage Door Cable Replacement

EmergencyExtension Spring ReplacementThe opener groans on the way up and the door slams the last foot on the way down, hard enough to rattle the windows.

The fix

When one extension spring breaks, the other is replaced with it. The two springs were fitted together, have stretched the same number of times and have rusted in the same air, so the survivor is near the end of its life.

Until then

Book soonEmergency Release RepairSomeone pulled the cord last spring to get a car out during an outage, and the door has never properly rejoined the opener.

The fix

Most households meet the release for the first time in a power outage, usually in winter. The door is shut, the car is inside, and the red handle is the only way to move the door.

Until then

  1. Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.

  2. Lift a door by its handles or the gripping points on the panel face, never at the joint between sections, which closes as the door bends around the track.

Book soonGarage Door Opener Diagnosis and RepairIt is a January morning and the door lifts about a hand's width, groans, and settles back down.

The fix

Garage door opener diagnosis is a fault-finding visit with a fixed order of tests. The technician confirms power at the ceiling receptacle, tries each control on its own, checks the safety sensors and their indicator lights, examines the drive train from motor to trolley, and reads any flash code the unit is showing.

Until then

  1. Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.

  2. Never drive a vehicle at a closed door to get out; the door collapses and the stored tension in the counterbalance is released.

Get in touch about your garage door in Freeman.

For an older door in Freeman we look for ways to keep it. Original wood doors and extension-spring setups can run for many more years with safety cables, fresh pulleys and a properly set opener. When a door truly is finished, we say so and explain what a replacement would involve, without pushing.

Burlington, Brant Hills, Clarksdale, Glenwood Park, Highview Survey, Mountain Gardens, Palmer and Tyandaga

  • We show, then tell. Worn cables, tired springs and misaligned sensors are pointed out on the door itself, so the explanation makes sense.

  • Clean-up included. Old parts are removed, surfaces wiped and the floor swept before we consider the visit complete.

  • The right repair for your situation. Some doors deserve a full refresh; others need one part. We help you weigh that against how long you plan to keep the door.

It has been a hard winter. The bottom seal froze to the slab twice, the opener groaned each morning, and one afternoon you noticed a cable on the left side hanging with a little slack in it.

The garage doubles as a workshop, and with the heater running the floor near the door stays cold and the draft finds your ankles at the bench. When the wind is up you can feel the air moving under the door.

The new door went in last year and looks perfect, but the old wooden stop and its tired seal were left in place. Along the top there is a gap you could slide a finger into, and the cold pours through it.

Garage Door Perimeter Weatherstrip

Someone slid the inside lock across before bed, and in the morning someone else pressed the remote. The opener groaned, the door jumped and shuddered, and now the lock bar is bent, the section is creased and the door hangs crooked at the top.

One of the little wheels along the edge of the door has a chunk missing, another sits crooked in its hinge, and there is a fine grey dust on the floor under the track where plastic has been wearing away.

The home inspector's report on the house you are buying flags the garage door: extension springs with no safety cable running through them, coils showing rust, and a door that sank when he lifted it partway. The seller has never had it looked at.

Extension Spring Replacement

7 / 10

Someone in the family tried to add a remote, held the button on the ceiling unit a little too long, and now every remote in the house is dead at once. The wall control still moves the door. The remotes act as if they were never programmed.

Garage Door Remote and Keypad Programming

8 / 10

The house came with a controller already screwed to the garage ceiling and a sensor on the door, but the app insists the device belongs to another account. The seller has moved provinces, the emails go unanswered, and every evening the door still reports to a stranger's phone.

Smart Garage Controller Setup

9 / 10

Your garage is becoming a workshop, but the thin single-skin door rattles, sweats and lets outdoor temperatures shape the whole room. You want a stronger sectional assembly suited to the way the space is now used.

Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation

This garage will be heated and used beyond parking, so the opening needs more than a basic closure. Insulated sections, perimeter seals and careful contact at the finished floor matter from the first installation.

What the census means at the door

47%

Homes of every age. About 47% of homes in Burlington were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

A neighbourhood with homes from several decades means a technician meets both generations of garage door in a single day: extension-spring wood doors next to steel sectionals on torsion hardware. The van carries parts for both so either kind of door is repaired on the first visit.

50%

A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 50% of homes in Burlington (2021 Census).

Mixed housing brings mixed garage use: workshops and storage in the detached homes, everyday parking and a tight squeeze in the attached ones. Sealed rollers and protected sensors suit the busy workshop door; a quiet opener and a well-balanced door suit the townhouse.

Advice · (289) 816-6526

My door is quite old. Is an inspection still worthwhile?

Yes, and often more so. Age alone does not say how much life is left in a spring or a roller, but condition does, and an inspection measures condition. Many older doors are sound and simply need a few worn parts and fresh lubricant. Where the report shows several items coming due at once, you can weigh planned repairs against a new door with real information rather than a guess.

What is a threshold seal, and when is it worth adding?

A threshold seal is a rubber or aluminum-backed strip glued to the garage floor along the line where the door closes. The door's bottom seal lands on it, and its raised outer edge turns water, wind-blown debris and small visitors back toward the driveway. It earns its place where the drive slopes toward the garage, the slab sits below the apron, or the floor edge is too uneven for the bottom seal alone to meet cleanly.

Why should the seal only touch the door lightly?

The fin is meant to bend against the door with a small, even deflection. That is enough to seal, and it lets the fin spring clear as the door lifts. Pressed hard, it drags on the door face, folds under on the way down, squeals and wears through well before its time, and it adds load to the opener. Set too far off, it leaves a standing gap. The light touch is the setting that lasts.

Do you replace the whole handle or just the cylinder?

Whichever the fault calls for. A worn or broken cylinder in a handle that is otherwise sound is swapped or rekeyed on its own. A handle that is cracked, corroded through or of a pattern with no parts available is replaced as a set with its spindle and inside turn handle. The technician shows you what has failed before either route is taken.
