Door stuck open
Safely, right now
- Leave it where it stopped. Don't pull it down by hand or keep pressing the button.
- Keep people, pets and cars out from under it.
- Leave the red emergency release alone while the door is up: it can come down hard.
Door won't close
Safely, right now
- Stop pressing the button. Trying again and again strains the opener and the top of the door.
- Keep clear of the doorway, even to move something out of the way. Tell us on the call if you can see anything in the door's path.
- Never tape over, bypass or move the little sensors near the floor to force it shut.
Spring snapped
Safely, right now
- Don't lift the door by hand and don't use the opener.
- Keep everyone, pets included, and every vehicle away from the door.
- The emergency release stays untouched while the door is up, because the door can come down.
Car stuck inside
Safely, right now
- Never try to push through the door with the car.
- If you heard a bang or the door feels heavy, don't pull the release or lift it. A spring may be broken.
- Leave the car inside for now and plan another ride.
A residential garage door can weigh as much as two grown adults, and the springs above it are wound to carry exactly that load. Our technicians in Tyandaga work with winding bars, clamps and stands, secure the door before touching tension, and run it through full cycles before they call the job finished.

The fix, explained · Tyandaga
What is the door doing?
EmergencyTorsion Spring ReplacementAfter pulling the red release cord, you tried lifting the door yourself and it would barely leave the floor.
The fix
The finished result is a door that behaves the way a good garage door should: it lifts by hand with light effort, stays where you leave it at mid-height, closes softly and lets the opener run with little strain. Reaching that point involves measuring the door, choosing a matched spring, winding it to the correct turns and…
Until then
When a spring breaks, the safe approach for the household is to leave the door where it is, keep people and vehicles clear, and avoid running the opener, which can damage the top section, the trolley or the gear drive.
Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyOff-Track Garage Door ResetA delivery van backed into the shop's overhead door this afternoon.
The fix
Off-track doors are really two problems in one, and the reset addresses both. The first is the visible one: a roller outside its rail and a door out of square.
Until then
Never run the opener on a door that is off its track or hanging crooked; every cycle drives the racked door harder into the rails and can pull the track from the wall or tear a hinge.

EmergencyGarage Door Cable ReplacementThere was a sharp crack from the garage, and when you went to look the door had dropped on one side and jammed.
The fix
A cable visit runs in a set order. First the opener is disconnected and the door clamped so nothing can move.

EmergencyExtension Spring ReplacementThe opener groans on the way up and the door slams the last foot on the way down, hard enough to rattle the windows.
The fix
When one extension spring breaks, the other is replaced with it. The two springs were fitted together, have stretched the same number of times and have rusted in the same air, so the survivor is near the end of its life.

Book soonEmergency Release RepairSomeone pulled the cord last spring to get a car out during an outage, and the door has never properly rejoined the opener.
The fix
Most households meet the release for the first time in a power outage, usually in winter. The door is shut, the car is inside, and the red handle is the only way to move the door.
Until then
Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.
Lift a door by its handles or the gripping points on the panel face, never at the joint between sections, which closes as the door bends around the track.
Book soonGarage Door Opener Diagnosis and RepairIt is a January morning and the door lifts about a hand's width, groans, and settles back down.
The fix
Garage door opener diagnosis is a fault-finding visit with a fixed order of tests. The technician confirms power at the ceiling receptacle, tries each control on its own, checks the safety sensors and their indicator lights, examines the drive train from motor to trolley, and reads any flash code the unit is showing.
Until then
Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.
Never drive a vehicle at a closed door to get out; the door collapses and the stored tension in the counterbalance is released.

What the census means at the door
47%
Homes of every age. About 47% of homes in Burlington were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
Where homes of different ages sit together, the common thread is that every door eventually needs springs, rollers, seals and a balance check. What differs is the spring type and the size, so the technician measures and matches rather than fitting a standard part.
50%
A mix of homes. Single-detached houses make up about 50% of homes in Burlington (2021 Census).
A blend of housing means a blend of garages: spacious attached garages with full headroom on the detached lots, and tight tandem garages with little side room in the attached units. Openers, tracks and springs are all sized at the door rather than assumed from the street.

When a garage door in Tyandaga has stopped, the household is usually stuck too, so we organise the day around getting the door moving safely. The technician clears the fault, checks the rest of the door so the next part does not follow, and explains what he did before he drives away.

We show, then tell. Worn cables, tired springs and misaligned sensors are pointed out on the door itself, so the explanation makes sense.
Clean-up included. Old parts are removed, surfaces wiped and the floor swept before we consider the visit complete.
The right repair for your situation. Some doors deserve a full refresh; others need one part. We help you weigh that against how long you plan to keep the door.

Which fix fits?
IfLifting the door by hand feels like lifting the car.
ThenSpring tension adjustment or replacement.
The springs are meant to carry nearly all the weight; when they fade, the strain shifts to you and the opener.
IfWhen you release the opener the door slides down on its own.
A balanced door stays put at half height; drifting means the springs need winding or replacing.
IfThe door flies up on its own and bangs the stops.
Too much tension is as hard on hardware as too little; a careful adjustment settles it.
IfThe home inspector's report on the house you are buying flags the garage door: extension springs with no safety cable running through them, coils showing rust…
ThenExtension Spring Replacement.
When one extension spring breaks, the other is replaced with it.
Before you book
Will the tune-up include replacing worn parts?
Small wear items found on the day, such as a roller or a hinge on a middle section, a bottom seal or a few fasteners, can often be replaced during the visit if you agree and the part is on the truck. Larger items, including springs, cables, drums, bottom brackets, a bent track or an opener gear, are written up as separate repairs with their own quote so you can decide with the facts in hand rather than under a raised ladder.
What information helps when I call?
Whether the springs run along the tracks or sit above the door; whether one is broken, hanging loose or just looks stretched; whether the door is closed, open or stuck partway and level or crooked; roughly how wide and tall the door is and what it is made of; and whether there is a cable running through each spring. A photo taken from inside with the door closed answers most of that at once.
What do the blinking lights on the opener mean?
They are a diagnostic code. On openers made in roughly the past fifteen years, the head unit flashes its lights, or a pair of up and down arrows, in a counted pattern such as one flash then five. Each pattern corresponds to a fault family on the maker's chart for that model: sensor circuit obstructed or open, motor commanded but not moving, more force than allowed. The technician reads the pattern, then confirms it by hand, since one fault can imitate another.
How much slack should the chain have?
It is a measurement, taken with the door closed and disconnected from the trolley. At the middle of the rail the chain should sit at the height the opener's own manual specifies for its rail shape, since the figure is not the same across makes. The two nuts on the trolley set and lock it. With the door reconnected and closed, some droop appears; that is expected as long as the measurement returns when the door is open.
